Experimental Victoria punk legends NoMeansNo lead the week of picks with a headlining slot at The Republik on Thursday October 13. While you can read about them in this very issue of Fast Forward Weekly be sure to experience the richness of their three decades of relevance live and in person.
What would a Friday night be without a high-profile show from local Calgary talent? Long-running indie pop weirdos Foon Yap and the Roar will celebrate the release of their brand new album at Broken City on October 14. Not only is the music delectable but the new disc comes lovingly packaged like a DIY pop-up book.
Of course that’s not the only option for your Friday night adventuring as Young the Giant bring their mainstream-friendly “indie rock” to the MacEwan Ballroom. Belonging to the same “Something the Something” camp of watered down alt-rock as Foster the People and Cuff the Duke this band will either blow your mind or push you into a mediocrity-induced coma. Enjoy the Music or Skip the Bullshit you decide.
Two options for brain-blistering rock ’n’ roll will be heading your way on Saturday October 15 beginning with a pavement- and eardrum-shredding skateboarding showcase at The Palomino. Spastic Panthers Better Off Dead Topanga and the Flatspots and Warbird will come together to benefit the Calgary Association of Skateboarding Enthusiasts. Whoever can grind the rails into the venue’s basement deserves some sort of prize.
If you like your guitars slow and moody instead head over to The Area for Deadhorse ’s tour fundraiser also on Saturday October 15. Seeking money for their trek to the Halifax Pop Explosion! the local sludge rockers have enlisted the help of Edmonton’s Krang alongside Lungpuma! Animal Skulls .
Maybe you just want to dance however and that’s completely okay thanks to Los Angeles party-starters Classixx who will bring their anthemic electro to the HiFi Club on Saturday October 15. Remixing everyone from Phoenix and The Ting Tings to Shiny Toy Guns and Shwayze this rising duo has also released some excellent original material on French boutique Kitsune. Sure to blow up catch them at this intimate location while you still can.
If you like your electronic music a little more er Korn-y be sure to catch the unevenly haircutted dubstep punchline Skrillex when he invades Flames Central on Wednesday October 19. The former From First to Last vocalist is the most mainstream of dubstep artists so don’t expect to impress any hip Burial fans by attending.
That’s not your only option for hump day however as Vancouver art-rockers Rococode will bring their unique sounds to town. According to their biography “they strive to create music that is equal parts arty accessible sexy sweet badass bent and beautiful.” Show up at Broken City on Wednesday October 19 and decide if they’re pulling it off.
