Mo money for NMC

City unlocks funds for National Music Centre of Canada

The National Music Centre (NMC) — formerly Cantos — received the remaining $22.5 million of a $25-million grant from the City of Calgary’s Standing Policy Committee on Community and Protective Services on June 6. The money was part of a funding commitment the city made to the NMC in 2010.

NMC communications manager Camie Leard says the release of the money was contingent upon the centre raising a given percentage of its own fundraising goals.

“For a project this size we’re doing really well” says Leard. “We’re still fundraising; we have a $132.5-million goal for the campaign. We’re currently around $92 (million).”

With the approval of a building permit expected this summer the NMC plans to break ground on its ambitious new facility in the fall. The National Music Centre of Canada to be located in the East Village adjacent to the Stampede grounds will be a 135000-square-foot building incorporating five art galleries a radio station recording studios performance stage classrooms café gift shops and the historic King Eddy hotel as a live music venue.

“In the end we hope that Calgarians and the rest of Canadians will come through for us on fundraising so we can finish it all in 2015” says Leard.
