While San Francisco’s Jonas Reinhardt have earned a reputation as kosmische-minded synth explorers the band is quickly proving that they’re hardly a one-trick pony. With each new release the Jesse Reiner-led project manages to strike out into brave new sonic territory while somehow retaining that spaced-out Jonas M.O. The same holds true with their latest release Rusting Ciphers of a Forgotten Sky a collaborative effort with fellow San Franciscan Abyss of Fathomless Light (a.k.a. Bert Bergen). Picking up on some of the darker elements from last year’s Music for the Tactile Dome this sprawling two-track head trip truly borders the line between unsettling and blissful with its two 15-minute-plus tracks going from blood-curdling vocal manipulations to light floating synth workouts to industrial-styled percussive samples and back again. And this juxtaposition is entirely intentional as the press release explains “Among immense hangers towers and factories emptiness screams… We gaze upon these forms with awe and horror as they oscillate between blight and ecstasy and mirror our own emotional spectrum.” The resulting sonic artifact is a challenge to say the least but in the best way possible as few recordings run the gamut of emotions quite like this.
