Goings On – week of May 2 2013

On Thursday May 2 Saskatoon-based folk team Gunner & Smith will treat Broken City to a performance where they’ll be joined by Extra Happy Ghost!!! homie Matt Swann who’ll hit the stage under his Astral Swans moniker. That’s not the only bird-themed band playing however as there’s also a band called John Lesbian Seagull . Yes you read that right.

You may as well pass out in a pile of coats at Broken City because Friday May 3 offers up one of the best bills this month. We’ve already dedicated an entire cover spread to the dreamboats in The Mandates but they’ve compiled an incredible lineup for their LP release show. Openers Bitter Pricks bring the sass while The Von Zippers bring the garage. The whole thing’s rounded out by the return of Vancouver punks Greenback High .

Delocated . A cat in a shark costume riding a Roomba. The Short Music for Short People compilation. Each of those things started from an unfathomable and downright ridiculous idea but ultimately succeeded. Add Sled Island’s upcoming Rock Lottery to the list of ideas that are so insane they just might work.

On Saturday May 4 a total of 25 musicians from basically every local band you’ve ever heard of will meet for breakfast at The Palomino. Each person’s name will be drawn from a hat and randomly matched with other names drawn from the hat to form new bands on the spot. Then they’ll spend the day writing a set to be performed at The Palomino that evening. If you’ve ever wanted to see Fast Forward Weekly contributor Devin Friesen have a guitar duel with The Dudes’ Danny Vacon now’s your chance.

You know what else seems dumb in theory but rules in real life? Starting a record label. Apparently the folks behind the Modern Math DJ night along with Crude Records and Dan Solo of Sanctums didn’t get the memo that there’s no money in music and we’re all better off for it. They’ve pooled resources and formed Modern Math Recordings a label that’ll release Sanctums’ fantastic new EP MM001 on May 31. First they’ll celebrate the launch of their label with a party at the Hifi Club on Saturday May 4. It’s a stacked bill with appearances from Taal Mala Sergio Levels Piranha Piranha Crimson and of course Sanctums . Not to be missed.

Switching gears from IDM to EDM New York-based bass-bringer and Skrillex associate Jake Stanczak will tear it up for a sure-to-be packed house at Commonwealth on Sunday May 5 when he performs as Kill the Noise . The dude’s a renowned remixer having upped the wubs for everyone from Kanye to Korn.

Finally on May 8 legendary Japanese psych artist Masaki Batoh will present his Brain Pulse Music project at Broken City. The whole thing sounds pretty heady and I mean that literally — the artist has developed a machine that can capture brainwaves and transform them into audible sounds. Think good thoughts.
