Hosehead Records
It’s generally poor form to review your friends’ projects but I can’t help it with Ottawa power-pop powerhouse Steve Adamyk Band. I’ve only ever hung out with them once but I can tell they’re friends for life.
Where your classic nice guys use social skills to hide terrible music this band happens to be one of the strongest in Canada. After three LPs and countless singles of their timeless creative anthems they haven’t fucked up a single song yet.
Monterrey a new four-song 7-inch on Toronto’s Hosehead Records continues the track record.
The title track is a mid-tempo stomper with a slightly more aggressive chord progression suitable for a bunch of denim-clad ex-hardcore kids to bust out a two-step in the pit. “You’re Fired” and “Front to Back” are amped-up punk anthems with singalong harmonies and creative riffs. Then there’s “For You (Hold On)” which’ll have you falling in love.
Monterrey sees the band dirty up the production a little with some blown-out grit on all of the instruments. There’s also the addition of a dirge-y organ which only makes the songs more interesting.
The Steve Adamyk Band are one of the most dependable bands in Canada and you should definitely check them out. Just be careful — if you ever see them live you’ll probably wind up friends.
