Population steadily rising

Canada’s population is more than 35 million according to Statistics Canada. The nation’s population has increased steadily at a rate of about one per cent every year for the past 30 years.

In the last 20 years most of that increase was due to international migration; between July 2012 and July 2013 immigration accounted for two-thirds of Canada’s population growth. Canada also had the strongest growth rate among G8 countries between 2006 and 2011.

Population growth in Alberta surpassed that of other provinces last year at 3.4 per cent compared to the overall national level of 1.2 per cent.
