According to Urban Dictionary a banger is “a song to get all da bitches in the club movin [sic]” that is “extremly [sic] tight or just unbelivably [sic] awesome.” After Miley Cyrus announced her new album would be “Nothin but #BANGERZ” on Twitter I was foolish to assume she knew what she was talking about.
Still Bangerz has plenty of ’em thanks to banger-maker Mike Will Made It who brings out Miley’s debaucherous bangin’ side. On top of banger extraordinaire “We Can’t Stop” he brings in Britney Spears for the ludicrous rap attack “SMS (Bangerz)” and the bro-baiting Big Sean-featuring “Love Money Party.” Pharrell who’s banging these days is unavoidable has another banger on his hands with the show-stealing “#GETITRIGHT.”
But if I’m gonna pick nits I’ve gotta point out just how unbanger-y slow jams like “Wrecking Ball” and the Future-aided “My Darlin’” are as well as how unbanging it is to have will.i.am on your album — even though “Do My Thang” isn’t quite “Black Eyed Peas bad.”
Bangerz is a polarizing listen that some will proclaim genius (see Buzzfeed ) others mindless (see Pitchfork who won’t acknowledge it). However as banger-making machines go Miley got pretty damn close.
