Bestseling novelist and comic book legend Neil Gaiman will give a reading in Calgary in February 2014. The award-winning author has been named the 2014 Distinguished Visiting Writer for the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program .
Gaiman came to attention in the 1980s for The Sandman a comic book that was credited with taking the genre to a new level and gaining respect for the form. He has also written bestselling novels including Neverwhere Stardust Anansi Boys and American Gods and numerous book for children such as Coraline and The Graveyard Book .
Several of Gaiman’s works have been adapted for film and television and other projects are in the works including a new mini-series The Sandman: Overture a prequel to The Sandman series which will air on October 30 2013.
His work has earned him Newbery and Carnegie medals and the Hugo Will Eisner and Bram Stoker awards. Gaiman joins the ranks of previous distinguished visiting writers at the U of C including Margaret Atwood Art Spiegelman Oliver Sacks Deepa Mehta and Michael Ondaatje.
