Rare lack of condemnation in auditor general’s report

Alberta Health Services received less condemnation than usual from auditor general Merwan Saher in the auditor’s latest report. Saher’s office examined AHS’s and Alberta Health’s implementation of the government’s 2008 Infection Prevention and Control Strategy.

The report found the strategy has fostered a stronger focus on infection prevention in hospitals and new AHS systems have filled “critical gaps” that existed in preventing the spread of infections in medical facilities before 2008.

“During our hospital visits we did not observe instances where there was an immediate and significant risk to patient safety” says the report.

However vaguely defined management roles are still a weakness in infection prevention just as previous auditor reports found them to be elsewhere in Alberta’s health system.
