Celebrate Valentine’s day with Sperm and Intercoarse

When The Back Alley was still a place I’d drive down Macleod Trail read the names of upcoming performers on the sign and say “whoa I totally forgot that Collective Soul were ever a band.” What would follow was an afternoon of YouTube digging reliving riff-heavy classics like “Where the River Flows” and suppressing tears while I hummed along to pensive heart-swellers like “The World I Know.” They don’t write ’em like they used to.

Now that The Back Alley has closed and its owners have replaced it with the Marquee Beer Market I was worried they’d stop booking discount-bin artists from yesteryear. After all they even had Pusha T out there for a show last month. Thankfully on Thursday February 13 they’re proving me wrong with an appearance from former Shady Records rapper Obie Trice along with some version of D12 that definitely won’t include Eminem. Watching some dudes perform “Purple Hills” and “My Band” to a backing track in 2014? Sounds delightful! And even though Marquee seems to be focused on rap as of late there’s still a place for Collective Soul — they’re playing at Cowboy’s Casino in April.

Friday marks February 14 meaning all the single people in your midst will be trapped in a deep hole of bitter self-pity while those in long-term relationships will likely break out their nicer sweatpants and share a box of Shoppers Drug Mart brand chocolates. Those looking for something with a little more rough sex and semen however would be wise to head over to Tubby Dog where bands with very Valentine’s names like Intercoarse and Sperm will take the stage. The evening of raw hardcore action will be rounded out by appearances from Exotic Functions and a new band called Traumatized . Talk about romance.

If you’re a cheapskate looking for an easy gift you could probably get by on a free 7-inch. Vancouver dance-pop outfit Bear Mountain will be playing a free (Scion-sponsored) show at Commonwealth on Friday that if you RSVP in time will come with a free 7-inch. Just give that to your dumb date and he or she will be none the wiser.

Since any holiday that can rhyme with “pal” always does here in sunny Palgary the Palomino will have their own February 14 celebration lovingly dubbed Palantines’ Day . The show will feature appearances by local psych/garage dabblers Devonian Gardens along with Lazercake and Tiny Shrines .

On Saturday February 15 Weird Canada will celebrate the launch of its brand new Wyrd Distro network with a series of events across Canada. Calgary’s Wyrd Distro party takes place at Sloth Records and includes a performance from Wicked Healing and a DJ set from curmudgeonly Fast Forward Weekly contributor and Sloth employee Devin Friesen. From what I’ve heard he’s definitely taking all of your requests so come with a list of your favourite top 40 pop and contemporary Canadian “indie” music. He loves that shit.

Finally on Sunday February 16 there’ll be a late Valentine’s Day party for Calgary beard enthusiasts at the Bamboo Lounge featuring performances from Napalmpom Chronobot Nosis Poison Pens Triton and A Day As Wolves . Fittingly the event is called Hairy Valentines.
