Andrew Hewitt – The Double

Milan Records

In the world of film scoring Andrew Hewitt is still a relatively new name but for those anglophiles following the career of comedian and filmmaker Richard Ayoade he’s quickly becoming a familiar face. Following various TV projects Hewitt branched out substantially with Ayoade’s first feature film 2010’s Submarine blending classical orchestral and chamber tropes with more adventurous electronic textures a template he expands and improves for Ayoade’s followup feature The Double .

Much like Submarine (which also featured several songs by Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner) The Double has many sides. On one hand there are Hewitt’s more traditional orchestral compositions which switch between ominous and dramatic mood pieces playful piano flirtations and floating dream-like sequences. Then there are several “Replicator” tracks which fully embrace Hewitt’s electronic side with some vintage drum machine-fuelled electro-pop.

And finally to change things up entirely comes a handful of classic ’60s and ’70s songs from the Far East such as the Japanese standard “Sukiyaki” the soaring group sounds of Jackey Yoshikawa & His Blue Comets’ “Blue Chateau” and the moving folk rock masterpiece “The Sun” from Korean chanteuse Kim Jung Mi.

As a package it gives you a lot to chew on yet never overstays its welcome fitting the eccentric minimalist tone of The Double perfectly and becoming an engrossing listening experience all on its own.
