Kyle Bobby Dunn – Kyle Bobby Dunn and the Infinite Sadness

It’s difficult to describe a minimal ambient drone record — a lot have a similar sort of progression and the tracks are fairly long. I usually listen to that stuff to get some sleep. With the latest record from Kyle Bobby Dunn however he avoids these clichés. The album is mammoth clocking in at over two hours but no track exceeds 13 minutes. This means the build-up of a track doesn’t take long and at some points it gets straight to the punch.

These tracks may seem repetitive at first but they unravel slowly and with precision. and despite the title of the record many sound beautiful and fairly positive. That said track titles like “An Excrement Suite (for voices lost again)” and “Boring Foothills of Foot Fetishville” may keep your parents from plopping this down on the record player.

It’s hard for some to get into ambient drone music. A lot of it sounds similar and tends to fade into the background. But Students of Decay is something extraordinary cuttin’ away the crap and keeping the listener intrigued.
