The Second 50 Years of your Life

The Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary presents a 10th Anniversary Symposium Public Lecture: The second 50 years of your life – The contribution of brain science. With Guest Speaker: Baroness Susan Greenfield University of Oxford.

A baby born now in the developed world has a one in three chance of living to be a hundred. Whilst we adults may not enjoy such encouraging odds the probability is still high that we can look forward to a longer life than any preceding generation. Insights from neuroscience can contribute to how we might make the most of this unprecedented and extended life span. For example it is becoming increasingly apparent just how sensitive the human brain is to individual experiences and how each moment you are alive will leave its mark on your neuronal circuitry a process known as ‘plasticity’ whereby the physical brain is arguably personalized into a unique ‘mind’. One of the biggest challenges currently is to ensure that this individual mind is protected from the ravages of neurodegenerative diseases: we need to explore highly novel and imaginative approaches for devising an effective therapy so that everyone can live not just a long life but a truly fulfilling one.
