On September 29 (National Coffee Day) the co-founder of Calgary’s newest coffee roaster Monogram Coffee took home the grand prize at the 2014 Canadian Barista Championship in Toronto — a good start for a café that hasn’t opened yet.
This is the second year in a row that Ben Put has brought home the gold – he nabbed last year’s title and represented Canada at the World Barista Championship in Rimini Italy.
At the competition each barista was challenged to make four espressos four cappuccinos and four signature drinks in just 15 minutes for the panel of judges. The victory means Put and the team at Monogram Coffee will be heading to Seattle to represent Canada for the World Barista Championship in April 2015.
Monogram is the newest addition to a city that takes coffee seriously. The company was founded by baristas Jeremy Ho Justin Eyford and Benjamin Put all veterans of Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters with over 20 years’ experience in the industry from buying to roasting to brewing.
The café’s brick and mortar presence in Calgary is still in the works but in the meantime it will be bringing its coffee to the people in other ways. “We want to introduce collaborative events that challenge traditional partnerships and present coffee alongside things that change people’s perceptions and inspire wonder” states the Monogram website.
This September Monogram’s first local collaboration with DaDe Art and Design Lab in Inglewood provided an interactive tasting experience for the TBD exhibit launch and Artwalk and will transform into a pop-up café from mid-October to December. Keep your eyes open for new projects in the works – if you need help with that just grab a cuppa Joe.
