Just a few months ago Bristol beat scientist Nick Edwards released his latest Ekoplekz full-length Unfidelity via Mike Paradinas’ esteemed Planet Mu imprint. Already the producer is back in our lives though this time via a humbler shorter affair.
Teaming up with budding Vancouver electronic label More Than Human Edwards has kept things relatively low-key for his Influkz 12-inch once again flirting with a knack for left-field experimentation and improvisation as well as his ever-improving sense of melody. But while Influkz in many ways follows in Unfidelity’s wobbly footsteps pairing minimalist vintage kosmische-like synth passages with some shadowy dubstep tactics it’s decidedly looser and airier than its full-length counterpart and all the better for it.
The relaxed feel of Influkz heightens the meditative vibes especially during the sprawling and cavernous “Zone Stikz” and playful closer “Unkonabulate” which somehow manages to weave in some almost island-like vibes. And even when Edwards decides to indulge in that dark side such as on “Fluktuate” there are those melodic touches to help guide you along.
Edwards already had a pretty great 2014 in the can but Influkz is icing on the cake.
