Asses are pretty hilarious and always will be. It’s just a fact of life. But twerking is no longer funny. Thanks to Miley Cyrus’s championing of the movement twerking has been ass-imilated into pop culture and become the butt of many jokes during your parents’ dreadful watercooler conversations.
The nice thing about it no longer being funny however is that you can now twerk up a storm without fear of some goon with a moustache finger tattoo and bacon-scented Band-Aids chuckling up beside you. Instead shake your fart factory without irony when renowned DJs Meaux Green and Party Favor drop some bass-heavy jams at the Hifi Club on Thursday October 16 as part of their Twerk Circus tour.
The Peak Performance Project is coming to the end of its current round of live showcases with one last show hitting Republik on Thursday October 16. The showcase features appearances from Edmonton’s Wet Secrets alongside locals Samantha Savage Smith and Boreal Sons and there’s a combined total of over $200000 in money to be won. That’s like four beers in Calgary’s nightclubs.
While the Peak Performance Project represents potential alt-radio stars of the future however the ghost of alt-radio past will pay a visit to Dickens Pub when acoustic yarl rapper Everlast takes the stage on Thursday night. True story — a friend of mine thought Hayden had half-learned how to rap when he first heard Everlast in the late ’90s.
If it’s rock ’n’ roll you crave it’s rock ’n’ roll you’ll get. On Friday October 17 Napalmpom will play their rock ’n’ roll songs about rock ’n’ roll at beloved rock ’n’ roll club The Palomino. The group is celebrating the release of their debut album The Unconditional Love of Napalmpom an 11-song blast of energetic guitars and throat-shredding vocal wails that prove despite the puns and the silliness (the LP’s black-and-white cover can be coloured in with accompanying markers) these guys are deadly earnest about what they do.
Once you’ve celebrated rock ’n’ roll for an evening you’ll be ready to enter the world of computer-based electronic music. The fine folks at Beat Drop have put together Beat Camp an all-day all-ages exploration of beat-making complete with tutorials and lectures. That runs during the day on Saturday October 18 and will be followed by an after-party at the Hifi Club featuring Curses and Neighbour.
On Sunday October 19 two rock-leaning singer-songwriters will take the stage at Commonwealth as Astral Swans kicks off an ambitious tour through Halifax Pop Explosion CMJ and a trek through Europe. The event’s listing says the project’s Matt Swann is “desperate broke and afraid.” The tour kick-off show also includes appearances from Lorrie Matheson and CATS a new project from Rena Kozak.
Remarkably relaxed singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen recently released a new album as Bahamas. Simply titled Bahamas is Afie the album features more of his smooth simple folk jams. On Monday October 20 the artist will perform at Knox United Church. His hazy lazy vibes will have those sturdy church benches feeling like chilled-out hammocks in no time.
