Contents Series: REPLEVY

This series of photographic images entitled “Replevy” represents a personal and visual exploration of Calgary and was produced as an act to (re)visit different geographical sites in the city.

After ten years living in another part of Canada I have recently returned to the place where I spent my childhood; this move prompted a desire for a visual and photographic rediscovery of the city I once called home. With this idea of re-discovery in mind I sought to first simply look at the city around me. Then with a sense of nostalgia I chose and photographed locations from my past such as the neighbourhood where I attended junior high or the downtown core I walked through regularly on my way home from school.

In addition to contrast these familiar locations I intentionally placed myself in other neighbourhoods unfamiliar to me but which I found visually interesting—sites such as Sunnyside Nose Hill and Victoria Park. The subjects found in the images range from family members to friends to acquaintances but ultimately all come together to represent a single part of my identity: an individual in transition and an artist who is constantly exploring and re-discovering what is around her.

This mix between old and new memories nostalgia and new discoveries creates a unique conversation between my present self and the city I currently inhabit.
