Cockroach Zine (CZ) is hosting a Feminist Open Mic event where audience members will be encouraged to make Valentines for women in shelters in an effort to show support and raise awareness about domestic violence.
“Valentine’s Day can be a lonely occasion and everyone deserves to feel special and loved. As a feminist zine Valentine’s Day is a fitting opportunity to have our supporters create handmade cards to share love and positive vibes with women who are going through a difficult situation” says Meg Crane editor of CZ in a media release.
Those who want some entertainment and company while they make cards can find both at Hear’s My Soul Café (107-535 8 Ave. S.E.) on Thursday February 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Feminist Open Mic night will welcome people to share five minutes music poetry comedy etc. and crafting supplies for making cards will also be available for those in the audience.
Last year the feminist/environmental zine based in Winnigpeg gathered more than 800 Valentines for that city’s Siloam Mission homeless shelter. This year CZ has been working to gather even more cards before February 14 when they will be distributed at women’s shelters across the country.
