bugles
After the last couple of fairly depressing Snack Talk columns it’s refreshing to get back to something basic something that I believe many will enjoy. I am talking about Nacho Cheese Bugles.
Bugles are a great alternative to the potato chip. They offer a softer crunch but are still fairly salty. The shape is similar to a cornucopia. If someone made a very large bugle stuffed with chicken wings mozzarella sticks and a variety of other pub snacks that might just be the greatest cornucopia ever conceived! Most of them do not really look like a horn but instead a shriveled up snail.
Bugles were introduced in 1966 as one of five new fun-shaped snacks. Daisies whistles bows and buttons were the other “wild” shapes but they have all been discontinued. Why these shriveled up snails stood the test of time I will never know. In Japan they are called “Tongari Corn” which is a way better name.
Bugles were discontinued in 2010 in Canada due to the snack being unpopular but due to a high demand they returned in 2011. I guess in just one year Canadians remembered to give some love to such a tasty treat.
This is a very addictive snack and the reason might be that it is fried in coconut oil which makes it much higher in saturated fat than other salty snacks. I remember sharing a bag of Bugles with my family while working on a puzzle at our cottage many years ago and that bag disappeared in no time. It’s kind of weird that most of my memories centre around food but that is okay! It’s necessary.
The Nacho Cheese flavour is pretty good but I could do without so much of the nacho cheese powder. Maybe dial it down a little bit. The original is the go-to but I would be a little more intrigued on the other flavours if there weren’t a blizzard of powder on these guys. I keep cleaning gunk off my hands before I type.
Like I said these are addictive so I keep dipping my hand into the bag every once in a while. I am sharing these with my good friend/roommate and it’s really difficult to even get this article done. It’s a fun snack! It keeps me occupied and it’s a nice thing to share.
The only problem is it’s probably completely horrible for me and it makes it hard for me to concentrate on the important matters at hand like telling the Fast Forward audience what a great foodstuff this is. Huzzah to the Bugle!
