Goings On – Week of Feb. 12 2015

It’s Valentine’s Day this weekend meaning basic vanilla couples are likely going to hit up the Olive Garden and provided they can get past their acid reflux engage in some post-dinner coitus likely adding another new life to their cookie-cutter home in some cul-de-sac on the edge of the city. That said if you’d like to go out for a romantic night of music there are plenty of options hitting Calgary venues this weekend.

Few people inspire panty-dropping sexiness like the baritone-voiced rap crooner Rich Homie Quan whose clever lyrics are delivered with buttery smoothness. Aside from his breakthrough hit “Some Type of Way” and a number of other solo singles Quan’s made plenty of waves with his partner in crime Young Thug. The two released one of 2014’s best albums with their Rich Gang mixtape and Quan delivered plenty of sexy sexy lines about pleasing the ladies. Take their perfect single “Flava” where Thug sings “I’ma cum a week later / I’ma spread that pussy out like an acre” then Quan adds “I’ma give her my seed no sunflower.”

It’s sensual lyricism like this that makes Rich Homie Quan a must-see act. Thankfully he’s playing Calgary on Thursday February 12 headlining a show at Marquee Bar & Stage that also includes a supporting slot from Ayoo Angie among others.

It’s important to have frank open discussions about the various ways you’d like to defile each other. As a nice reminder local pop experimenters Nicolas Field and Noah Michael (of La Luna among many other acts) have named their new band Consensual Acts. They promise Weezer-esque love songs and they’ll play a show on Thursday night with Brother Prussia and The Cable-Knits at Nite Owl.

Some forms of boning are not for everyone and you might prefer to spend your weekend with a more holy theme. If so you could hit up MacEwan Ballroom on Friday February 13 where Christian metalcore heroes August Burns Red will perform a headlining show.

For the exact opposite style of hardcore punk local creeps Glitter are hosting their very own Valentine’s Day party on February 14. Billed as a “formal ball” the Tubby Dog event sees the band releasing their new Live at CJSW tape. They’ll also be joined by Edmonton’s The Strap and locals Golden Path. Join your sweetheart in the pit.

For romantic metalheads there are not one but two options on Valentine’s Day — over at Mac Hall Ace Ventura’s favourite death metal band Cannibal Corpse will perform alongside Behemoth. Over at Republik grindcore champions Napalm Death will perform with Voivod.

True lovers of wordplay The Palomino will once again host their Palantine’s Day party with performances from Wine-Soaked Preachers Run Deer Run and Lucky Sonne.

If you manage to get through Valentine’s Day without contracting VD there are plenty of other happenings this week. Notably Warp Records electronica legend Nightmares on Wax will stop by Commonwealth on Sunday February 15 to perform a special DJ set.

A few nights later on Wednesday February 18 Commonwealth will once again play host to a veteran DJ with the return of renowned turntablist Skratch Bastid.
