Welcome to the new look theYYSCENE.
This is the second time we’ve done this in the past six months and it’s just as exciting as the first.
We’re pleased to relaunch the site as theYYSCENE.com with features that will make it easier for you to interact and access all of the information that brings you to Calgary’s go-to guide to getting out. The amazing folks at The Morning Roast Collective, particularly Willis Hoff and Adrian Urlacher, were instrumental in helping us make things that much better here.
First, is the clean design of the landing pages — less crowded, easier to navigate and scroll through.
Second, we’re happy to make Calgary’s most comprehensive and complete event listings incorporated into the site in a way that makes it that much simpler to plan your entertainment outings and see the remarkable amount of things that are taking place here.
And finally, and most excitingly, you’ll notice at the top of the page a heading for FFWD REW. We are pleased to now have and offer readers the online archives for late, lamented Calgary institution Fast Forward Weekly.
Through the incredible generosity of Gary Davies, who purchased the name and its assets when the publication was shuttered, we are now able to make available almost 10 years of an important chapter in this city’s cultural and social history. We will be uploading them gradually over the next few months.
For two of us here, Mike Bell, who was the arts and music editor for the first five years of the publication, and Kari Watson, who was the listings editor from Day 1 until the very end, it really was a meaningful part of our lives. And for the many contributors to FFWD — who did remarkably vital, interesting and entertaining work over its 19-year history — as well as those who picked it up religiously every Thursday, we hope that by preserving some of those articles will be a reminder of how necessary it is for those who live in a city to document the lives and stories of those who make it what it is.
Now, more than ever, we believe that to be true and we’re committed to that, and we hope you agree and support us in our efforts to continue that work.
Thank you for reading theYYSCENE.
Cheers,
Mike, Kari and Janet
