Train, The Wallflowers, Grapes of Wrath and “surprise artist” to play 2018 Roundup MusicFest

The train of big-time Stampede concert announcements keeps on a-rollin’.

On Monday morning, the folks behind Roundup MusicFest announced the lineup for this year’s event, taking place July 11 at Shaw Millennium Park, and the corporate party will be headlined by veteran American rock act Train.

Joining the San Fran group known for such hits as Hey, Soul Sister, Drops of Jupiter and Calling All Angels, are fellow ’90s holdovers The Wallflowers — led by Bob Dylan’s son, Jakob — as well as Canadian ’80s faves Grapes of Wrath and a booked, but yet-to-be-announced fourth artist that organizers promise will blow Calgary music lovers away.

“We are also excited to announce the final bill will include a four-time Grammy-nominated, internationally acclaimed surprise artist to be announced the third week of June,” said Sarah Geddes, communications director for the Roundup MusicFest, in a press release.

“Our surprise artist is one of the biggest and most recognized artists in Roundup history, and will perform immediately prior to Train.”

This is the second year for the Roundup MusicFest, after organizers split from their partners on the Stampede Roundup, which was a staple of the Stampede season for years at Fort Calgary, and teamed with co-producers Live Nation Canada and 51 North Productions.

The inaugural MusicFest in 2017 at Shaw Millennium Park featured headliners Duran Duran with Capital Cities and Walk Off the Earth.

Once again, some of the proceeds of the concert will be donated to the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre, whose mandate is “to help our Canadian Armed Forces military personnel and their families cope with the unique military lifestyle challenges.”

“We’re also proud to partner with the event’s corporate sponsors, Blakes, Grosvenor, Qualico, Molson Coors, Mr. Mikes, and Air Miles, to raise funds for our charity partner, the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre,” said Ian Low, of Live Nation Canada, in the release.

“Giving back to the community is extremely important to the event, and we are honoured to have an association with this worthy charity.”
