Carbolizer is the hauntingly moody, darkly melodic, beautifully dreamy electro project of Calgary artist L. Adam Fox.
And it represents a huge stylistic swing from Fox’s former, pastoral folk-pop persona, as he puts away the guitars and embraces the electronic side of the sonic spectrum for something that remains warm, rich and very human.
“I had been spinning my wheels for a couple of years following the release of Field Assembly’s album Narco,” Fox said in a release for the record. “I actually recorded an album of material, but in the end I scrapped it. I did work out some new methods in the process of making that record that led me to the realization that I could expand stylistically by removing some of the limitations that I’d been imposing on my work.
“I started writing with different instruments, approaching writing without the conventions I’d become used to — that led me from piano to keyboards, to synths, to drum machines, samplers, etc. I realized I could really do anything I wanted, and that led to Carbolizer.”
After having already released a trio of singles — Ring, exe and Editor — Fox is gearing up for the eponymous album’s release on Friday, Oct. 26, and a brief tour, including a hometown date Nov. 9 at EMMEDIA.
But you don’t have to wait until then to hear the complete album, as he’s given theYYSCENE the honour of streaming Carbolizer in its entirety.
