I know that I say that there’s a lot going on in Calgary every week, but this week I am not fooling around. It. Is. Nuts. So many great things! However will you choose? Let me help (or not help, since I’m giving you way too many options. I do it because I love).
Thursday: Springboard Performance’s 2018 Fluid Fest is coming to a close this week and tonight you should check out Lisbeth Gruwez Dances Bob Dylan at the DJD Centre. And the New Central Library is opening today! Go and see this beautiful building and all of the celebrations surrounding the opening. Lunchbox Theatre’s Brave Girl is a great idea for a lunchtime sojourn (take your lunch! why not?) and Wordfest presents Paul Myers with his book Kids in the Hall: One Dumb Guy at the Memorial Park Library.
Friday: Puddles Pity Party at the Bella Concert Hall. A clown who can belt ’em out — what more could you ask for? Bright Lights presented by Theatre BSMT takes place at Pumphouse Theatres (an alien abduction experience support group? bring it) and runs until Saturday, and Ron & Wayne’s Halloween Comedy Special featuring Ron Pederson and Wayne Jones over at the Engineered Air Theatre.
Saturday: #LoveYYC Day over at Studio Bell, Dan Cardinal McCartney: Misgendering Mouthfuls will take place at the Untitled Art Society, The 7th Annual European Film Festival kicks off at the Globe Cinema, and music! We’ve got it! Jack White with guests at the Stampede Corral, Birds of Chicago with Daniel Rodriguez will be over at the Gateway, and Spiritus Chamber Choir’s season opener The Colour of Freedom will take place at Knox United Church. And let’s not forget Class of ’88 featuring improv gurus Rebecca Northan and Derek Flores bringing you a blast from the past over at Loose Moose Theatre. This looks totally fun.
Sunday: Pulled Strings — A Celebration of Chinese Food, Film and Music looks amazing – a short film, live musical performances and pulled noodle demo? Yes please! This takes place at Festival Hall. Danny Michel will not be pulling noodles, but he will be performing at Ironwood for two shows at 2 p.m. a 8 p.m.. Tash Sultana — Flow State World Tour with guest Ocean Alley will be over at the Grey Eagle.
Monday: It’s TONTO Week at NMC which means the NMC AiR Workshop: A Tribe Called Red x TONTO is happening at Studio Bell.
Wednesday: Doc Soup: The Price of Everything takes a look at why art costs so dang much, screening over at Eau Claire Cinemas. And that, my pals, is your week.
There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
