A strong, assured voice in music should bring a sure, steady hand to the lineup of Sled Island.
Organizers of the Calgary alternative arts festival announced that Julien Baker, a Tennessee singer-songwriter and member of Forrister (formerly The Star Killers) and boygenius (with Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus), will be the guest curator of the 2019 event, which takes place this year from June 19 to 23.
Her picks as well as the first headlining acts will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Baker is known for tackling tough subject matter in her gorgeous alt folk-rock material, making the deeply personal profoundly cathartic for her audience.
The 23-year-old joins past Sled curators such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Flying Lotus, Deerhoof, Kathleen Hanna, Pavement’s Scott Kannberg, Wire’s Colin Newman and Peaches.
She’ll also headline a evening at The Palace Theatre Saturday, June 22, 2019.
Single tickets for the show will be available in the coming months, but Sled Island passes, which will get you into the gig (subject to capacity), are on sale now from SledIsland.com, or in person at Sloth Records and Lukes Drug Mart’s Bridgeland location.
Tuesday, Jan. 15 is the final day that Sled Island 2019 Discovery and Discovery Plus Passes are available at 25 per cent off ($169/$289), with prices switching to semi-early bird pricing ($191/$327) after midnight and lasting until Feb. 12.
The fest also has four-month payment plans going on from Jan. 15-April 14. For more information on all of these options go to sledisland.com.
