This is a big week -— we’re gearing up for Stampede and even if the whole Stampede thing isn’t your … thing, there’s a lot going on around town in the name of Stampede that is really, really great. Trust me! I know what I’m doing!

Thursday: Head over to Lougheed House for a Métis culture pop-up party — immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Métis people and discover parts of our collective history that you never knew. Feel like some comedy? Efthimios Nasiopoulos will at the Laugh Shop, and for not comedy, the Oscar Lopez Trio will be performing at The Blues Can.

Friday: Wordfest presents a Taffy Weekend Experience with Taffy Brodesser-Akner: two events, attend one or both! All happening at the Memorial Park Library Friday and Saturday. In the Alberta Spotlight this week at the King Eddy is Calgary grindcore band WAKE with Begrime Exemious, and Pentatonix — The World Tour with guest Rachel Platten will hit the Saddledome.

Saturday: The Market Collective Summer Takeover continues at the St. Louis Hotel, and you’ll for sure want to check out the Summer 2019 Launch Party at the Glenbow, with festivities including music by The Torchettes, DJ Myke Atkinson, and exhibitions by Nick Cave (the visual artist, not the man I affectionately call the all-being), Ed Pein and Kent Merriman. It’s not really summer until you head down to Prince’s Island Park to check out Theatre Calgary’s Shakespeare by the Bow, and this year features a Midsummer Night’s Dream, so go take in some outdoor culture.

Monday: Canada Day celebrations abound! Over at the National Music Centre there’s free admission to Studio Bell, and NMC and Cold Garden Brewery present a Garden Party on the King Eddy Rooftop — all free! Also, Canada Day festivities at Fort Calgary include food trucks, Kids Zone and more, and a Canada Day Block Party will take place at Max Bell Centre presented by MarketSpot YYC and True Rhythm with music and entertainment.

Wednesday: You’ll find me at the Jack Singer to check out Help Me I’m Dying — a one woman show with drag queen extraordinaire Katya Zamolodchikova. Go! It’s a multi-media, multi-character, multi-faceted live stage show that talks about what it means to be a woman, from the perspective of a person that dresses up like one. What isn’t to love?

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
