Top picks for getting out Sept. 26 – Oct. 2 including Calgary International Film Festival, Doors Open YYC, Alberta Culture Days and The Cancer Bats

It’s definitely a busy time of year, if me barely being able to keep up with all of the everything is any indication. Don’t just take my word for it, see for yourself!

Thursday: History Happenings — Métis culture pop-up party will take place at Lougheed House, and is a great night of interactive Métis urban art, music and ideas. Pure musical options for the evening include Murray Fitch performing at Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar, Rosanne Cash at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, and the Jay Coda Walker Band can be found over at The Blues Can.

Friday: The Calgary International Film Fest keeps on trucking! Tonight you could check out Mystify: Michael Hutchence over at Studio Bell. I will be there reliving my youth. Before hitting that film you (and I!) can catch the CPO’s Rush Hour presentation of Opera’s Greatest Hits at the Jack Singer Concert Hall — an hour-long classical concert? Sign me up! Fort Calgary presents Black & White Movie Night featuring The Manchurian Candidate tonight, and Michael Bernard Fitzgerald plays the Bella Concert Hall.

Saturday: It’s Doors Open YYC. Check out their site to see what buildings you can shamelessly go poke around in around town — for free, mostly! The Print It Yourself Festival takes place at the Alberta Printmakers Gallery as part of Alberta Culture Days. And Calgary Film’s closing gala takes place tonight at the Globe Cinema and features two screenings — Eddy Murphy’s new film, Dolomite is My Name, and Atom Egoyan’s Guest of Honour. As part of the festivities there will also be a block party featuring specials at surrounding destinations Paper St., Junction Stage + Bar, The Derrick, and State & Main. Read all the info here. Also on Saturday, An Evening with Dweezil Zappa – Hot Rats & Other Stuff will be at the Bella Concert Hall (swoon), and Boy & Bear will be at the Palace. There’s a lot of choice for Saturday, but you can do multiple things! Like me, who will be attending a film and then running over to The Palomino to check out one of the best local bands this city has to offer, Salt Horse! They’re releasing their EP tonight, so get over there and check them out! They’ll be playing with In Search of Sasquatch and The Spanish Flies.

Monday: RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werk the World Tour 2019 takes place at the Jubilee and will feature some of your favourite Queens from the Emmy Award-winning show.

Tuesday: Can You Hear Me Now? is a Jr. High and High School open mic and poetry slam, and it’s taking place tonight at Shelf Life Books! Amon Amarth — Berserker Tour with guests Arch Enemy, At The Gates and Grand Magus will be at the Grey Eagle Event Centre.

Wednesday: PIGS: Canada’s Pink Floyd — In The Flesh Tour 2019 will be at the Bella Concert Hall, for all you Pink Floyd fans! And you can catch Morpheus Theatre’s Lend Me a Tenor over at the Pumphouse Theatres.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
