We’re already in the thick of it! There’s so much happening this week that I am just going to dig right in. You’ll thank me after your eyes are tired from reading all of this. Trust.
Thursday: Art Calgary 2019 will be showcasing the best contemporary art in town at Mona Lisa Salon this weekend, and over at Contemporary Calgary you can catch a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey presented by Collider x Calgary Cinematheque. Take in some Cocktails & Culture this evening at the Glenbow, featuring the work of Sybil Andrews and artisan cocktails inspired by her art and life. John McDermott’s Family Christmas takes place at Studio Bell, CUFF.Docs takes place at the Globe Cinema and comedian Danny Bhoy is at the Jubilee Auditorium.
Friday: In the market for some holiday gifts? Make It! The Handmade Revolution is taking place at inKubator, Northland Village Mall this weekend. Alberta Dance Company presents The Enchanted Toy Shop over at DJD Dance Centre, and The Shakespeare Company opens their latest production, The Merchant of Venice at the Reeve Theatre, U of C. CK Sax and Friends will be performing at Kawa Espresso Bar, The Redline Trio with Mike Rud will be at Lolita’s Lounge on the Music Mile, and over at Broken City you can catch The Night Terrors with The Ivies, Safe at Second and Biloxi Parish.
Saturday: The Calgary Expo Holiday Market takes place at the BMO Centre today, so get down there and find something for that special nerd in your life (in my case, it’s me. I’m the nerd in my life). Rich Aucoin will be at Commonwealth Bar, and at the Jack Singer Concert Hall you can catch Holiday Pops with Rune + Jens presented by the CPO. Over at Theatre Calgary you can take in their updated version of A Christmas Carol at the Max Bell Theatre, and at The Grand you can catch some neo-soul and jazz tunes at Winter Chill.
Sunday: Calgary Cinematheque presents a free screening of the 1964 film Marnie this afternoon, and in the evening you can catch Evan Freeman’s Beyond The Stars Album Release at the Engineered Air Theatre. Over at the King Eddy, it’s Big Hank’s Tribute to Blues Songs of Christmas.
Monday: Serena Ryder’s The Christmas Kisses Tour will take place at the Jubilee, and Theatre Calgary teams up with The King Eddy for Spotlight at The Eddy — Holiday Special featuring local artists performing holiday tunes.
Tuesday: Evening Birds with guest Buddy Elliot will be performing at Ironwood, and you can still catch Vertigo Theatre’s production of Sherlock Holmes and the Raven’s Curse.
Wednesday: Doc Soup presents Picture Character, a film about emojis, at Cineplex Eau Claire. Wordfest presents Neil Paricha, author of The Book of Awesome and The Happiness Equation at the Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall, Central Library. And NMC & Sled Island present LOSCIL at Studio Bell tonight, so that right there is a full week.
