Top picks for getting out Jan. 9 to 15 including High Performance Rodeo, The Ashley Hundred and violinist Michael Foyle

Hey! Back in the swing of things, let’s do this, January! I’m not sure if you’re aware, but there’s a little festival happening right now, something like a Rodeo, something something theatre … Lett’s see how this festival and the rest of the awesome events happening around town battle it out!

Thursday: It’s the Fit Cities Book Launch with Dr. Karen K. Lee at Shelf Life Books, while over at the Plaza Theatre you can catch Calgary Cinematheque’s presentation of Bad Timing (1980). The 2020 High Performance Rodeo kicked off on Wednesday and this evening you can catch bliss, Belong, It’s the End of the World as We Know It, The Land and the Animals, aaaaaand, to top off all of those performances, you can head to the Laycraft Lounge in Arts Commons afterwards to take in a piano bar hosted by the incomparable Kenna Burima. See you there! If you’re hanging out in Inglewood, check out Kate Stevens at Off Cut Bar at the Nash, or maybe you find yourself at Broken City to take in Ancient Shapes with The Quivers and The Ashley Hundred. So much to do tonight!

Friday: Over at the Good East Village you can see Brian Kennedy’s performance at 6 p.m., and the High Performance Rodeo continues with, amongst other things, a Community Gathering and CBC’s The Secret Life of Canada – Live! Podcast. Over at the King Eddy it’s The Blake Reid Band.

Saturday: Violinist Michael Foyle (UK) with pianist Colleen Athparia will be performing at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, U of C. Drew Gregory will be at the King Eddy, and, as part of HPR, why don’t you check out Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life at Lunchbox Theatre, or maybe the 10 Minute Play Festival?

Monday: It’s PechaKucha #40: WILD over at the Central Library, and Theatre Calgary’s Spotlight at The Eddy features eclectic musical stylings over at, you guessed it, The King Eddy.

Wednesday: The Global Perspectives Film Series presents The Traitor over at the Globe Cinema, Mariana Mazza will perform at La Cité des Rocheuses, and over at Shelf Life Books you can take in Free Exchange – helping to raise money for Free Exchange Graduate Conference. And HPR? The John Ware Project Reimagined, Footnote Number 12 and Cliff Cardinal’s CBC special are all on deck tonight.
