Postcard Profile: Storybook Theatre’s artistic director JP Thibodeau

Caroline Russell-King’s Postcard Profile of JP Thibodeau, artistic director and producer for Storybook Theatre (with a nod to Bernard Pivot and James Lipton).

What is the next project for you?

The Neverending Story — I am directing my first play (as opposed to musical) in 10 years. Ten years ago, I did a play called Gone Fishing by Todd McGinns.

How do you contribute to this piece?

I am the director and the producer.

What is your greatest creative challenge?

It’s probably dreaming too big, not because I’m afraid of dreaming too big but I put pressure on myself to exact that dream.

What turns you on creatively?

Passionate, positive people, who are as excited as me to be on a project. People who don’t take opportunity for granted.

What turns you off creatively?

People judging artists without knowing them. We put ourselves out there and are so vulnerable and we get judged by people without them knowing the struggle.

What’s one thing you’re really good at?

(Laughs) Sleeping! No, I’m good at championing people I believe in.

If you could resurrect and share a drink with a dead person who would it be?

My uncle, my father’s brother, he died of AIDS at the height of the epidemic.

What is one thing you wish you’d known sooner?

It’s more important to accept yourself than to have everyone else accept you.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

Project manager for oil and gas because I’d be rich! But, seriously I would be a film editor.

What would you do with extreme wealth?

(Laughs again) Sleep! But seriously, I would love myself more and everyone around me.

What is one piece of advice you would give to the person who wants to do what you do?

It’s OK not to say yes to everything.
