While all local cinephiles’ eyes will be on the Calgary Underground Film Festival at the end of April, its big sister, the Calgary International Film Festival is hoping you might also keep them in mind this month.
Normally, this is when the fest hosts one of its biggest fundraisers, the Red Carpet Affair, a glitzy gala surrounding the Academy Awards broadcast.
This year, for obvious reasons, CIFF will be switching things up for a trio of celebratory, fund-raising efforts running throughout April and leading up to the big show Sunday, April 25.
The first initiative is an old one — for the 16th year, all of the Oscar-nominated short films will be streaming online, thanks to the folks at Shorts HD and Magnolia Pictures. Check out the best of bite-sized brilliance from around the globe April 2 to 24.
Also throughout the month, CIFF will be running its Oscar predictions contest — pro tip: when in doubt, write-in Jason Statham — with each entry only $20 and prizes such as festival memberships and cold, hard cash.
That’s also the big draw for the third and final fund-raising initiative — the 50/50 raffle, with different ticket options and big bucks to be won.
