Aislinn Thomas: Dup-boug-a-dad

January 13, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm MST

David Gunn, an avid singer and cheerleading enthusiast, is the spirited star of Aislinn Thomas’ video installation, Dup-boug-a-dad, which opens at The New Gallery this Saturday. Upon entry, audiences initially hear Gunn’s voice and song. After moving around the large screen filling the majority of the exhibition space, audiences gain access to the video and come across two vibrotactile platforms, on which they are to view the piece. In the video, Gunn practices with the University of Waterloo’s cheerleading team. Gunn, who has a physical and cognitive disability, is deaf, and it is through the use of these vibrotactile platforms that he is able to ‘hear’ himself sing for the very first time. One of Gunn’s songs acts as the soundtrack to this exhibition and “is, at least in part, about lifting a cheerleader up with one arm.”

In lieu of an opening reception, Thomas has organized a dance / movement workshop, facilitated by artist Tia Halliday and dancer Kara Nolte.  This will be a time to lightheartedly explore movement and stillness, action and interaction, expression and receptivity, as led by our individual bodies, together. The workshop will take place on Jan. 12 at 12PM across from the gallery at the Calgary Chinese Citizens Elderly Association (111 Riverfront Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2P 4Y8).
