Art and the City
September 15, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm MDT
Art and the City is an ambitious project to curate the art that exists in plazas, lobbies and spaces in downtown Calgary in order to create an accessible and engaging ‘gallery’ of the city.
The event will talk place on September 15 and 16, with guided tours by gallery owner Yves Trépanier at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM on September 15th and at 2:00 PM on September 16th. The tours will
be starting at Bow Valley Square on the corner of 6th Ave. and 2nd St.SW and each tour will take approximately 1 hour to complete. Along the tour route, signage with maps and interactive QR codes will provide additional information about the artwork to both tour participants and interested members of the public.
Along the tour route, a poem by Calgary’s poet laureate, Sheri-D Wilson will be spray-painted on the sidewalk, inspiring a contemplation on the ephemeral qualities of the urban condition. This sequence of poetic verses will culminate at the corner of 3rd Ave. and 3rd St. where, in the Devon Building plaza, a live poetry reading involving several local artists will be occuring between 12:00 and 4:00 PM on September 15th and between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM on September 16th.
On September 21st, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Art and the City will also be integrated into the City of Calgary’s PARK(ing) day initiative, with an informational installation and event volunteers situated adjacent to the Bow Tower Plaza on the corner of Centre St. and 6th Ave. SE. This will also provide the starting point for self-guided tours along the Art and the City route, including the same informational signage at points of interest.
