Dark Night, Star Light Open House

November 17, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 11:59 pm MST

Join the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) and their conservation partners this weekend to celebrate and learn about conserving the wilderness of the dark sky. Maureen Luchsinger and Laura Griffith from the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area will talk about the stellar nocturnal preserve located just outside the Calgary city limits. Roland Deschesne of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Calgary Centre will be sharing his research on the effects of light pollution on songbird populations. The programming will cap off with the RAO sharing tips on how to help preserve our dark sky country.

The open house will feature access to an array of telescopes operated by University of Calgary astronomers and members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Calgary Centre.  You will have the opportunity to look through the telescopes and astronomers will be on hand to answer questions.

In the sky, Ursa Major points the way to the Polaris. Try and find the North Star in the winter sky.
