Femme Wave 2018
November 15, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 11:59 pm MST
Femme Wave, Calgary’s only multi-disciplinary feminist arts festival, has announced their full music, visual arts, film, and comedy lineup for their fourth year. Building on the success of the past three festivals, Femme Wave 2018 provides a platform for women and non-binary artists, highlighting multiple genres and perspectives.
Femme Wave’s Kick-off Cabaret presented by Sled Island (Thurs, Nov 15) will once again launch the festival, this year moving to Dickens Pub. The Kick-off Cabaret is an event that allows the festival’s interdisciplinary approach to shine. This year will feature film programming on the theme of ‘collectivism and activism,’ a visual arts installation, three comedy acts, a spoken word performance, and three Alberta-based bands. Be sure to visit the zine market while you’re at it!
The Femme Wave Fun House presented by FACTOR and Indigenous Resilience in Music (IRIM) (Fri, Nov 16) returns to the #1 Legion with a different twist. This year, the festival’s biggest night for music will largely focus on r’n’b and hip hop with headliners JB the Firstlady and Two Attached, the project of sibling duo Vivek Shraya and Shamik Bigli. Working in partnership with IRIM, half of the night’s programming puts the spotlight on Indigenous artists. In addition to the two alternating stages for music, the Fun House will host Hip Hop Karaoke, a special one-night-only visual arts exhibition, and a safer spaces sleep over.
The Femme Wave All-Day All-Ages Show Crawl (Sat, Nov 17) will run across downtown Calgary, starting with a brunch show at the King Eddy followed by a day of all-ages shows with 10+ bands from across the prairies at the National on 10th Bowling Alley and the McHugh House. Saturday evening will return to the King Eddy for AEMCON presents Dance this Mess Around. This event marks the festival’s first ever DJ night, further reflecting Femme Wave’s growth into new genres and arts communities.
Femme Wave Workshops (Sun, Nov 18) close out the festival and offer an opportunity to unlearn, learn, and relearn. This year’s workshop topics include body image, women’s writing, astrology, instrument making, harm reduction, and zine making. Stepping out from her headliner role to one as educator, Vivek Shraya will do an artist talk, sharing experiences from her work as an assistant professor, author, and artist.
Visual arts exhibitions will run at galleries around downtown Calgary throughout the festival. Stay tuned for more details.
