Floral Preservation and Potpourri with Laura Hansen
December 7, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - December 9, 2018 @ 5:00 pm MST
Learn the history and methods of wax floral preservation and potpourri making—traditions whose origins date back hundreds of years. Participants will be guided through both processes and be able to bring home their work that day, after the workshop.
French for “rotting pot,” potpourri is a process of curing in which organic materials wilt and decay, and are then preserved and spiced for fragrance; this practice originates in 17th century France, where the resulting organic matter was used as a means to gently scent rooms and spaces. If the process of preservation is done affectively and the resulting flowers and herbs are used sparingly, potpourri can last for decades. Relatedly, the life of a waxed flower is also prolonged past its typical organic lifespan, with the process of preservation.
