Lux & Umbra: Cemetery Exchange Project with Candace Makowichuck

Equinox Vigil presents a two-day event in Calgary’s historic Union Cemetery chapel, featuring a photography exhibition, workshop and artist talk by Candace Makowichuck, Edmonton Cemeteries Artist in Residence. Makowichuk specializes in historical photographic processes and predominantly works with Cyanotype, Bromoil, Gum Bichromate and Silver Gelatin. Working primarily with a historic bellows sheet film camera and 19th century photographic processes, her work references common locations by capturing elements of space and time and the intersections between urban sites, memory and the human impulse to connect.

A pop up exhibition of Makowichuck’s work produced during her current Cemetery Artist in Residence project with the City of Edmonton, entitled Lux & Umbra. Working primarily with historic photographic processes, Makowichuk has captured a variety of the unique and captivating elements found within the seven Edmonton municipal cemeteries and one traditional burial ground.

Lantern Making Workshop in the Union Cemetery Chapel

Saturday February 24 from 1- 4:30pm

Cost: $20.00

Combining traditional and modern methods, learn how to create a unique paper lantern using imagery from the Union Cemetery. All materials will be provided but you will need to bring either a digital camera or a phone that has a camera. There will be walking involved so please dress appropriately.

Artist Talk in the Union Cemetery Chapel

Friday February 23 from 6-7pm Cost: Free

Candace Makowichuk will discuss her current project as the Artist in Residence with the City of Edmonton Cemeteries. Working with historical photographic processes, Makowichuk will share her experiences of producing a variety of work during her exploration of the seven municipal cemeteries and one traditional burial ground.
