Marda Loop Justice Film Festival

November 13, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm MST

Three films focusing on the gender equality have been selected for screening in the upcoming Marda Loop Justice Film Festival.

What Walaa Wants (89 min, 2018) follows the story of Walaa, a girl raised in a refugee camp in the West Bank. Despite her family’s disapproval, Walaa breaks all the rules, survives basic training, and fulfills her dreams by becoming one of the few women on the Palestinian Security Force. Directed by Christy Garland, What Walaa Wants won the Special Jury Prize at HotDocs, Toronto. The Western Canadian Premiere will be held at 7:00 pm on Nov 14, 2018 at the Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Rd NW).

Burka Songs 2.0 (45 min, 2017) begins as a film focusing on the policing of burqas in France, but transforms into a deep reflection on how racism is discussed in the artistic sphere. Directed by Hanna Högstedt, Burka Songs 2.0 will be shown at 6:00 pm on Nov 17, 2018 at River Park Auditorium (3818 14A St SW).

Poetess (68 min, 2017) tells the story of Hissa, a fearless female Saudi Arabian poet who grabs the opportunity to speak out against extremism and stands up for a peaceful Islam. By sharing her daring and confrontational poems publicly, Hissa became the first female finalist on Million’s Poet, the Arabic-language equivalent of Idols, a show that attracts 70 million viewers per episode. Directed by Stefanie Brockhaus and Andreas Wolff, Poetess will be shown at 7:15 pm on Nov 17 at River Park Auditorium.

Other films include Metamorphosis by Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper, Beauty by Christina Willings and more.
