Ninth Annual Canadian Forces Memorial Film Festival at the Empress Theatre

The Empress Theatre is pleased to present the ninth annual Canadian Forces Memorial Film Festival on Nov. 9, 10 and 11 in Fort Macleod, AB.

Four military-related films will be shown alongside lectures and a veterans panel hosted by master of ceremonies Dr. Stéphane Guevremont, a military history instructor from Calgary who holds a PhD in Canadian military aviation. Prior to the screening of each of the festival’s films, Guevremont will provide insight and context on topics from the Western Front during World War I and the German army during the second World War.

Canadian Forces Memorial Film Festival 2018 Schedule of Events: 

Friday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m. 

Lecture: The Home Front: Canada and the Second World War
Film: Bye Bye Blues (1989) – Set during World War II, Daisy Cooper returns home to Canada with her children after her British husband, Teddy, a soldier, is assigned to Singapore. An amateur piano player and vocalist, Daisy starts a band to support her family. Unsure whether Teddy is alive or dead, Daisy is torn between staying faithful and giving in to her growing feelings for one of her band mates.

Saturday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m. 

Lecture: 1918: the Western Front in the Centennial of the Great War
Film: Journey’s End (2017) – Based on the 1928 stage play of the same name, this drama provides a glimpse into the experiences of British soldiers in the trenches of World War I during the last few days before Operation Michael.

Saturday, Nov. 10, 2 p.m. 

Lecture and veterans panel: Canadian Corvettes in the Battle of the Atlantic, 1939 – 1945
Film: Corvette K-225 (1943) – During World War II, the commander of a Canadian warship heads a convoy on a perilous voyage to Russia.

Saturday, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. 

Lecture: 1943: the German Army on the Eastern Front, 75 Years Later
Film: Cross of Iron (1977) – Cpl. Rolf Steiner is a well-respected member of the German military and a

recipient of the Iron Cross, Germany’s highest military honor. Envious of Steiner’s award, Capt. Hauptmann Stransky clashes with Steiner while leading soldiers into battle along the Russian front. Desperate to receive his own Iron Cross, Stransky takes the credit for a significant attack and sparks a heated rivalry with Steiner.

Sunday, Nov, 11, 1 p.m. 

The Royal Canadian Legion: A History of Remembrance and Commemoration
