Tamara Lee-Anne Cardinal: Feet on the Ground
September 29, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm MDT
Tamara Lee-Anne Cardinal, whose ancestral roots are Cree and German, danced powwow for the first time at the age of four in the “Tiny Tot” category of a jingle dress dance competition. Twenty years later, the jingle dress has become a key element of Cardinal’s art practice, as she seeks a deeper understanding of herself and her Indigenous culture.
Tamara Lee-Anne Cardinal: Feet on the Ground is a multimedia experience; videos of the artist dancing are presented beside two of Cardinal’s jingle dresses as well as two historical dresses from Glenbow’s collection. Together, the dresses in the exhibition span more than 100 years of Indigenous dressmaking during which the forms and styles of women’s dance regalia have evolved and changed through decades of innovation.
