‘Universe in Waves’ Open House at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory

September 15, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 11:59 pm MDT

Deepen your understanding of the world around us with presentations by researchers who have dedicated their careers to discovering more about the universe and the mysterious ways that it works. At this family-friendly event, Dr. Jeroen Stil will discuss his research in radio astronomy and the latest discoveries in gravitational wave detection. Wesley Ernst will provide an entertaining view of his work at the University of Calgary, and share some of his best physics demonstrations and how the universe is in motion. The evening will kick off with an observatory check-in, then a presentation on how to observe the sky by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Calgary Centre.

The open house will feature access to an array of telescopes operated by University of Calgary astronomers and members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Calgary Centre.  You will have the opportunity to look through the telescopes and astronomers will be on hand to answer questions.

In the sky – Cygnus the Swan will be soaring overhead and easy to find because of its alpha star Deneb, which is one of the farthest stars we can see with our eyes.
