Correcto really like Wire The Buzzcocks and The Fall. They really like them. Correcto like those bands so much that they spend a good half of their self-titled debut engaged in mimicry. Their songs attempt to bottle everything that made Wire’s artsy precision The Buzzcocks’ melodic post-punk and The Fall’s tuneless ranting so vital decades ago but understandably come out as flat pastiches.

The remaining half of the album proves far more rewarding. Though nowhere near original here Correcto slow their breakneck punk down to a crawl leaving vocalist Danny Saunders to deadpan and slur through some surprisingly engaging caddish lines over a minimal backdrop. Saunders possesses a bizarre charisma that comes through far more effectively on these slower tracks than on the upbeat material.

The two approaches make Correcto something of a mess and even the best bits don’t demand too much attention. The album is certainly listenable but other than a few good lines delivered from a guy who always sounds cripplingly drunk it doesn’t provide many reasons to listen.
