Anthony Braxton & Kyle Brenders – Toronto Duets 2007

Barnyard Records

It isn’t often that you encounter a double-CD set that challenges you and holds you through all its tracks. Anthony Braxton and Kyle Brenders’s Toronto Duets 2007 does just that. Braxton’s interest in the works of composers like John Cage strongly influences the soundscapes explored in this set — Braxton has always been about breaking new ground pushing expectations and challenging what we call “jazz” and he has found a perfect match in Brenders.

A Canadian composer whose music has been described as “boundless” Brenders trained with Braxton in composition and improvisation. It shows. These two saxophonists perfectly matched in improvisational talent and technical ability have crafted an absolutely entrancing album.
