SXSW: Dave Jaffer says hello

Greetings FFWD readers!

Allow myself to introduce…myself. I’m Dave Jaffer and I’ll be part of the FFWD team at SXSW 2011.

So how’d I land this plum gig? Well I’ve been a music journo and critic for a pretty long time. Also FFWD music editor Mark Teo is a buddy of mine so I had that working for me too. But it’s not like he plucked me out from underneath a hairdryer. Aside from the work I’m about to do for FFWD I currently write for Hour Magazine the Ottawa Xpress Citeeze and Spinner . In addition I co-author The National Beat and sit on a bunch of juries including but not limited to the Polaris Music Prize jury.

When I’m not writing about music I am completing an Education degree at the University of Windsor. When given occasion to I teach students who will invariably take my job someday important life skills like how to properly use a semi-colon the difference between "you’re" and "your" and the importance of art in contemporary culture.

So yeah. I’m a writer a critic and an elementary school teacher. I also have good hair and can dance. Single women of Calgary I am now accepting applications for the position of girlfriend.

Anyway.

For FFWD I plan on doing a little bit of everything. SXSW is a ridiculously large out of control unbelievably fun and impressively dynamic experience set in one of the best cities in America. I plan on reviewing sets and showcases and you can bet your damn boots I’ll be doing some gorilla reporting by full-on collaring musicians in the streets and getting a few minutes on the record.

(I know you think I meant to write "guerilla" but I didn’t. My style is shall we say aggressive and primal.)

Hopefully I will be able to work in some coverage of the conferences and/or the amazing exhibitions I’m apt to take in. Like if you collect show posters and have never seen the stuff at the Austin Convention Center during SXSW you ain’t seen shit son.

Overall I have but two goals: I want my coverage to be interesting and I want it to be accurate. I love doing this kind of thing and I know I’m lucky to be contributing to an excellent publication in FFWD.

I hope you like my steez.

– Dave
