Imagine a world where "straight" people are the minority and being gay is the norm. Local production Heterophobia reverses the roles and gives viewers a glimpse of how life would be if it were straight people who weren’t allowed to get married. The full-length play took the city by storm last year and is now back for a special one-night only performance at Hillhurst United Church which is an open and accepting congregation celebrating a milestone of its own Sunday.
Written by Pam Rocker the play is dubbed "a tall glass of gay with a twist of straight" and commences the same weekend that Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi will attend the two-year anniversary of Hillhurst United Church’s affirmation.
Church worship animator Joanne Anquist says the church is excited to welcome the mayor.
"The election of the mayor Nenshi in Calgary has helped reframe the view of our city both to ourselves and across the country" she says.
"It also speaks to aspirations of building an inclusive community where diverse voices are welcomed and respected. Hillhurst shares that vision."
Both events will take place this weekend and can be found at www.hillhurstunited.com.
