Following in Spring’s footsteps artists are gathering in Calgary this weekend to showcase their blossoming talent. It’s a great opportunity to esccape winter hibernation and take in some of the local (and out of town) artwork. With so many openings this weekend it’s not a matter of if anything is happening as it is a matter of which one to attend. Here’s a short list of what’s happening in the Calgary art scene this weekend.

Turner Prize* @ The New Gallery — The dreamy Saskatchewan-based collective comes to Calgary to debut their full collection of performative photographs. Social practice film photography and new media combine to create a truly original body of subconciously inspired work (pictured above). March 23 – April 28. thenewgallery.org

Bertrand R. Pitt @ TRUCK — Travellings is a video installation that morphs from Calgary landscapes to scenes of pure colour when viewers trip a sensor. The video changes depending on how long the participant watches. Only in town for a short time it’s worth checking out before Pitt’s travels take him well travelling. March 23 – April 19. truck.ca

Sean Macalister @ Haight Gallery — Created over six months Crows Nest is a body of mainly sculptural work centered on the ethics associated with an art practice. Macalister is a local artist who’s sure to leave an impression on you moulding a memorable experience with this solo exhibition. March 23-April 21. facebook.com

((HYPE)) @ Calgary Tower — Twenty one emerging grads from the Alberta College of Art and Design showcase their collective works using a multitude of different mediums. Ceramics painting fiber photography and performance are all on display at this exhibition at the base of the tower. Friday March 23. calgary2012.com

Spring Show + Sale @ ACAD — A collection of multi-disciplinary student work available from the professional artists of tomorrow. A great opportunity to snag one of a kind items from a wide variety of up-and-coming artists at a decent price. March 22 – 24. acad.cal

Saga @ Artspot — Contrast: Art Exhibition is just that — showcasing works in illustration clothing paint and photography. It’s sure to be a lively event with a variety of DJ’s and performances. Saturday March 24. artspot-calgary.com
