Mark McGuire – Nightshade

Wagon

Mark McGuire is one prolific dude. So prolific in fact that he’s sometimes so busy releasing records that he forgets to even tell his fans about them. You can count Nightshade as one of those McGuire releases you may not have even known existed despite the Emeralds guitar hero recording the cassette and selling it at his merch table before embarking on his recent Japanese tour.

Recorded on a C-50 Nightshade is very much a full-length release and one that was “first inspired under the bright and beautiful night sky of the Southern Hemisphere” the liner notes explain. The kosmische-coated music within very much falls in line with that source of inspiration as McGuire tones down his six-string theatrics for meditative ethereal pieces focusing more on crafting loop-based textures often with light bubbling electronics and emotive low-in-mix vocals. It’s a beautiful listen to be sure and much like last year’s Get Lost the record finds McGuire fully immersing himself in a tripped-out atmospheric haze exploring inner — as well as outer — space. So far there’s no word on whether Nightshade will see any sort of wider release but it definitely deserves one.
