Arts Plan up for discussion

After almost a year of consulting with the artistic community Calgary Arts Development (CADA) is now looking to consult with the public as its Arts Plan enters a new phase.

In May 2012 CADA set out to create Calgary’s first Arts Plan — a long-term strategy for the development of and investment in the city’s arts scene while preserving Calgary’s legacy as a Cultural Capital of Canada.

With months of consultation with the city’s artistic community under its belt CADA’s current working draft of the Arts Plan will be up for public discussion and feedback at a number of open houses throughout the city from April 15 to May 6. This open forum approach plays into CADA’s belief that citizen collaboration is a vital part of the plan’s development process.

“Public input has been key to the creation of Calgary’s first Arts Plan and we want to continue the dialogue with citizens as the Arts Plan takes shape” says CADA president and CEO Terry Rock.

The final draft of the plan is scheduled to be presented on June 5 at a public meeting of the City of Calgary’s Standing Policy Committee on Community and Protective Services though it’s possible this timeline won’t be met.

It is CADA’s hope that with the finalized plan citizens artists and arts organizations will work together to set long-term goals that will contribute to a thriving Calgary arts sector.
