Minimum wage increase coming

Brace yourself for another jump in the Alberta minimum wage. Starting September 1 the general minimum wage will increase 2.1 per cent – from $9.75 to $9.95 per hour. The minimum wage for liquor-servers will remain at $9.05 per hour; commission-based salespeople will receive an extra $8 per week as their minimum weekly base salary increase to $397. Finally live-in employees such as nannies must receive $1893 per month.

Based on a 37.5-hour work-week after the increase general minimum wage earners will make a monthly before-tax income of $1492.50. According to the Calgary Mortgage and Housing Corporation as of October 2012 the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment unit in Calgary was $1150 per month.

The minimum wage last rose on September 1 2012 by 35 cents an hour.
