Beakernight is Coming

Beakernight a night time multi-venue nerd-tastic street party — or should we say ‘street parties’! — is set to take place for the first time ever on Saturday September 14 in Calgary . Prepare for a complete stimulus overload. It’s set to be a large scale dance party featuring musical performances from German robot band Compressorhead and ArcAttack of ‘America’s Got Talent’ fame — the band that makes music through lightning bolts.

If you need more than music to let your inner geek out you’ll love the displays of art and engineering from a three-story interactive visual wall to roaming mechanical creatures and from a nine-foot-high fortune-telling laser cat to fire dancers and live science demonstrations. And that’s only skimming the surface of what to expect at the three venues exhibiting and celebrating simultaneously during Beakernight. Cherry on top it’s totally free and everyone is welcome to take part.

Here’s a taste of what you can expect at each location:

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14

8:00 p.m. to midnight

EAST VILLAGE RIVER WALK:

• Canadian premiere of U.S. ArcAttack ’s towering tesla coils chain mail and rock n’ roll at 8:30 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. on the BP Canada stage

Compressorhead : heavy metal robot band all the way from Berlin performing at 9:00 10:00 and 11:00 p.m.

• Engineered eats and food trucks

• Fire Spinners

Mondo Spider a 1000 kg mechanical machine by eatART Foundation (Vancouver)

• Roaming science demonstrations by TELUS Spark Science Centre

• Roaming LED light painting and animation station by Quickdraw Animation

VICTORIA PARK MARKET WALK 1325 1ST STREET S.W.:

• Explore a 40-foot tall Raygun Gothic Rocketship

• Geek-Out Freak-Out Dance Party (dress up as your favourite scientist artist robot or surprise us!)

BassBus and live DJs

• Interactive three-story 3D projection by Beama Visual Environments

• Engineered eats and food trucks

STEPHEN AVENUE WALK AT OLYMPIC PLAZA:

• Nine-foot tall fortune-telling Laser Kitty by Studio Cartel

• Speaker City interactive sound installation by PK Sound

• Interactive glowing sculptures and stages

i-ROBOT poetry readings

• Steampunk rendezvous

So grab your (art) bike and travel from one location to another and maybe discover something you weren’t expecting and be delighted and surprised by it. This is not “stand and watch” but very hands on so let your inner geek to be creative!
